Sherri Lea Hammond Gilkerson was born in Casper, Wyoming July 20, 1972. From an early age Sherri had an incredible love and connection with horses. Growing up in Lance Creek, Wyoming, she had local and national successes showing her horses, as well as being active in 4-H and rodeo. Sherri was Miss Rodeo 1992 for her county.
While Sherri seemed a natural talent at all she did, she was a very hard worker. She attended Laramie County Community College, competing on the LCCC rodeo team, and graduating from the Equine Management Program. She followed her passion for horses, and head for business, into the Equine Industry. In the years that followed she had great successes, winning many honors including the 2005 NRCHA Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Intermediate Open & Limited Open Bridle. Sherri was a rising star in the
National Reined Cow Horse Association!
Sherri’s life was taken too soon in a horse-related accident October 30, 2006 at the age of 34. It is the hope of Sherri’s family and friends that her memory will live on through the enrichment of young lives through education and sport.
Academic scholarships are awarded each July. In addition, scholarships are awarded at the NRCHA Foundation Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity and Horse Show in the Youth Bridle and Youth Limited classes.
